Here is Dan’s Story:
“It’s hard to put into words how important Action for Children has been for me. I could say I don’t know where I’d be without them, but that isn’t true - I’d either be on the streets and homeless, or in jail. “
Before Action for Children
Dan grew up with his Mum in Barnsley. The relationship was strained because he blamed her for his Dad leaving the family home when he was three-years-old.
By the time he was a teenager Dan was drinking, taking drugs and feeling depressed.
He went to live with his Dad in a bed-sit in Bradford when he was 14 after his mum told him she couldn’t cope with him anymore.
Dan stayed with his dad – a former heroin addict – for a year until their relationship broke down when his dad got involved with a new girlfriend.
He moved out, hoping to move back in with his Mum, but when he turned up at her door she refused to let him in and called the police.
Dan was placed in emergency foster care for a week and then lived in a care home for a year before moving to another for a further seven months.
It was around this time that Dan started using heroin. He managed to get himself off the drug a year later.
After Action for Children
Dan moved into a supported tenancy with the help of Action for Children six months ago.
He is off the heroin, much happier and enjoying the independence and sense of freedom his new living arrangements have given him.
Action for Children has supported him to start a college course in Maths. He is also learning to operate a forklift truck in the hope that this will lead to employment.
Action for Children has also supported him to build bridges with his Mum. The relationship is now much better than it was.
