Read Fraser's Story

“I got to meet lots of new people and the staff helped me develop a lot of my skills. They helped me with budgeting – all sorts of things. All young people should have this kind of support but not all of them do.”

Here is Fraser’s story:

Fraser never knew what to expect when he went home. He had been forced to move in with a friend of his father’s who was a drug addict. Often the house would be full of people drinking and taking drugs.

“I was stressed out because of the way I was living,” said Fraser from Dundee. “I just wanted it to end.”

It was Fraser’s third home in a year. Previously he had been living with his father who has an alcohol problem. There was no electricity in the house because his father hadn’t paid the bill and often no food.  Before that, he had been living with his mother but, latterly, had to sleep on the couch after his sister and brother both returned home.

Moving in with his dad’s friend seemed the best option at the time but Fraser knew immediately it was a mistake. “There were people coming up to the house, taking heroin. It just wasn’t very good at all.”

Life changed for Fraser after he was put in touch with the housing support service run by Action for Children Scotland in Dundee. Within a week Fraser was given emergency accommodation and support towards independent living.

“It was just so much better,” said Fraser. “I got to meet lots of new people and the staff helped me develop a lot of my skills. They helped me with budgeting – all sorts of things. All young people should have this kind of support but not all of them do.”

In June this year, Action for Children Scotland helped Fraser move into his own flat. He has now applied for a college place to study art and design and, for the first time, can see a better future for himself. “I now feel safe and secure. It’s great having my own place. Things are just so much better. “
