More children facing homelessness

Children are at an increasing risk of becoming homeless as the total number living in poverty remains above 2 million, official figures show. Figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government revealed a sharp rise in the number of homeless households. Local council data showed 50,290 households were accepted as homeless and in priority need, a 14% increase on the year before.

Figures show homeless households up by a fifth

The number of homeless households in England has risen by almost a fifth compared with the same period last year, official figures show. Some 12,830 families and individuals were newly classed as homeless between 1 October and 31 December 2011.

Homelessness rise of 14% ‘just tip of iceberg’

Charities have warned that official figures showing a 14% rise in people classed as homeless are just the “tip of the iceberg”, because they fail to capture huge numbers who have been displaced from their home and are living with friends, in hostels or on the streets.

Sharp rise in people sleeping rough in UK

The Communities and Local Government department (CLG) has reported a 20 percent increase in the numbers of people sleeping rough on the streets of the UK. There have been increases in rough sleeping in eight out of nine regions. In autumn 2011 when the last count took place, there were 2,181 recorded as sleeping rough at any one night in England.
