At CodeComputerLove were extremely proud to have taken part in Byte Night North West to help Action for Children in their efforts to tackle youth homelessness.
As a team of 9, the first time sleeping out for many of us – we weren’t sure what to expect. We arrived, dropped off our sleeping bags and headed up to the indoor reception. It was great to have a chance to catch up with other companies taking part before we all sat down to tuck into some warm chilli con carne and chocolate brownies. After dinner, we heard an inspirational talk from three young people who had been supported by an Action for Children Service. It was great to get an insight into how the money we had raised was being used and to hear the impact of Action for children on these young people’s lives.
In the back of my mind I was conscious of the time ticking away before we were going to be turfed out of the warmth and into the night ahead. When the time came we donned our extra layers, picked up our sleeping bags and headed out into the Piazza for a night on the concrete.
Action for Children had fenced off an area in the square where we were sleeping and although there was security to ensure we were not in danger, one of my lasting impressions was just how distressingly exposed it must feel to those sleeping rough for real.
On the whole the night was pretty rough but, totally bearable. It gave us an inkling of what it must be like to experience sleeping rough and made us feel all the better that we had done something to help young people avoid it.
